Opportunities and Challenges of Providing Library and Information Services in the Fourth Industrial Revolution Era
Abstract
The landscape of library and information service delivery faces challenges and opportunities in the global space. This paper highlights 4IR prospects in librarianship including changes in societal perception and acceptability, collaborative initiatives, improved service quality, and increased innovative capacity. It recognizes dimensional shifts in library services including higher productivity and efficiency, new job opportunities, improved service delivery, and skills set disruption. The paper articulates required skills including basic digital skills and cross-functional skills. Challenges include unavailability of infrastructure, low digital literacy, low innovative capacity, and fear of job replacement. Strategies for overcoming challenges include re-skilling programmes, acquisition of digital infrastructure, adequate funding, and continuing professional development.
